Research shows that, on average, families need an income of about twice that level to cover basic expenses.<br \/>\n<em>Reference:<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nccp.org\/topics\/childpoverty.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NCCP | Child Poverty &#8211; National Center for Children in Poverty<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"cei_2col_70_column right\"><strong>Media Headlines<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/economicintegrity.org\/?cat=9\"><i class=\"fas fa-newspaper\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i> Kinship Care<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cei_xcol_row\">\n<p>Families living and working on the margins are vulnerable and are often the target of corporate enterprises that seek to extract profits or exploit primary wage earners.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Early Childhood Education<\/h4>\n<div class=\"cei_xcol_row\">\n<div class=\"cei_2col_70_column left\">\n<ul>\n<li>Equal access to high-quality early education is essential for the future of children, families, business, schools, law enforcement, and our community\u2019s development. Community leaders from a variety of sectors including public education, business, nonprofit and local government are coming together to work through a proposed solution to this serious problem impacting Arizona\u2019s families. You can find out more about this issue by visiting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepreschoolpromise.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Preschool Promise<\/a> website.<\/p>\n<p>The local Tucson Ballot Initiative, Strong Start Tucson was soundly defeated by voters in November 2017 amidst surprising Democratic opposition. The initiative, if passed, would have increased local sales tax to pay for high-quality preschool tuition assistance for up to 8,000 3- &amp; 4-year old children in low-income families (including grandparent and kinship families). Latino voter support was high but turnout was disappointingly low.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Arizona Grandparent Ambassador Support &amp; Advocacy Network<\/h4>\n<div class=\"cei_xcol_row\">\n<div class=\"cei_2col_70_column left\">\nFor over a decade until 2023, CEI supported, facilitated and helped grandparents and kinship families organize and advocate for their issues as described below.    <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>CEI provided technical organizing &amp; outreach\u00a0assistance to grandparent\/kinship caregivers, in collaboration with other nonprofit organizations, in order to advance AZ Grandparent Ambassador public policy priorities in state-wide efforts<\/li>\n<li>CEI educated the general public and key decision makers with regards to economic issues affecting children in Kinship care<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cei_2col_70_column right\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azga.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1580\" src=\"https:\/\/economicintegrity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2016-09-17-AZGA-crop-507x338-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/economicintegrity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2016-09-17-AZGA-crop-507x338-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/economicintegrity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2016-09-17-AZGA-crop-507x338-150x100.png 150w, https:\/\/economicintegrity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2016-09-17-AZGA-crop-507x338.png 507w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cei_xcol_row\">\n<p>This presentation on <a href=\"https:\/\/economicintegrity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/2020-04-20-Presentation-on-AZGA-success-over-10-years.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AZGA successes over ten years<\/a> contains a summary of activities from its founding in 2010 up to 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DAY AT THE CAPITOL:<\/strong> This year&#8217;s day at the legislature on February 10th, 2020 had the largest attendance yet &#8211; 75 kinship families!\u00a0 The Day at the Capitol included a press conference, meeting with the Governor&#8217;s office, meeting with the Speaker&#8217;s office, meetings with individual lawmakers, and advocacy training.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p><strong>ANNUAL SUMMIT:<\/strong>The annual Arizona Grandparent and Kinship Caregiver Summit was held in Phoenix on September 14th, 2019. The Summit was a day of networking, education and advocacy training for kinship caregivers of all types from around the state. Together, we heard from educational and motivational speakers. We learned about how to be our own best advocates, and we also heard directly from a bi-partisian panel of state senators and state representatives. Grandparent and Kinship advocates set the state policy agenda for the AZGA each year at the Summit. Over a hundred caregivers and their families attended this year&#8217;s event.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ADVOCACY TRAINING:<\/strong> In January 2018 the Southern Arizona Grandparent Ambassadors (SAGA) hosted and attended an advocacy training, \u201cTelling Your Story\u201d and \u201cAsserting Your Rights\u201d in Tucson, AZ. Grandparent\u2019s learned how to effectively tell their family\u2019s story to make a lasting impact on policymakers; using personal stories to amplify kinship caregiver\u2019s issues in front of lawmakers. They also gained confidence and skills from a professional community organizer along with tips to strengthen their advocacy efforts with decision makers.
