{"id":621,"date":"2018-08-29T18:54:11","date_gmt":"2018-08-30T01:54:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/economicintegrity.org\/?page_id=621"},"modified":"2024-08-08T14:41:50","modified_gmt":"2024-08-08T21:41:50","slug":"donors-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/economicintegrity.org\/?page_id=621","title":{"rendered":"Donors"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"cei_xcol_row\">\n<div class=\"cei_2col_70_column left\">\n<h3>Who We Are<\/h3>\n<p>The Southwest Center for Economic Integrity was incorporated in the state of Arizona in December 2001 and granted the status of a 501(c)(3) public charity by the IRS in January 2003.<\/p>\n<p>We are a group of <a href=\"https:\/\/economicintegrity.org\/?page_id=56\">passionate volunteers and a very small staff<\/a> fighting to build economically strong communities for all and coming together to oppose unfair corporate and government practices. <a href=\"https:\/\/economicintegrity.org\/?page_id=60\">Our Founder, Karin Uhlich<\/a> clearly set out the need. <em>\u201c<strong>It&#8217;s expensive to be poor, and unfortunately it can be profitable to exploit poverty. The Center for Economic Integrity seeks to challenge that dynamic.<\/strong>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>What We Do<\/h3>\n<p>We engage in a variety of strategies to fight poverty and economic injustice.<\/p>\n<h4>Public policy and regulatory campaigns<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>We partner with the Healthy Families Coalition to fight for earned paid sick days for employees working in Tucson. Low-income workers often must choose between going to work sick or sending their child to school sick because they lack the ability to take sick days.<\/li>\n<li>We partner with state and national consumer advocates to ensure the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerfinance.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Consumer Financial Protection Board<\/a> (CFPB) adopts effective rules against payday loans and other predatory lending schemes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Education<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>We want individuals to make informed financial decision so we provide <a href=\"https:\/\/economicintegrity.org\/?page_id=98\">financial literacy education programs<\/a> through The Rural Family Asset Development program. We developed the materials and make them available to non-profits to implement the training.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Advocacy<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>We partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/wildfireaz.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arizona Children\u2019s Action Alliance<\/a> to create the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azga.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arizona Grandparent Ambassadors Support and Advocacy Network<\/a>. Research shows that approximately 70,000 children are living with and being raised by their grandparents. We trained these grandparents as advocates. They have successfully influenced legislation in Arizona to access financial assistance and to keep families together.<\/li>\n<li>We partnered with faith based organizations, veterans, the Arizona Center for Community Action, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.responsiblelending.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Center for Responsible Lending<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/consumerfed.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Consumer Federation of America<\/a> and neighborhood activists to defeat two attempts by the Arizona legislature to allow predatory loans with triple digit interest rates. I finally filed bankruptcy and devoted myself to educating others on predatory lending.
